My Guide to Pre-Game the Open Championship

I’ve been at Oxford Greens for a few months now, and my phone's algorithm has officially realized I work at a golf course. My feed is entirely flooded with pictures of massive sand dunes, heavy rain gear, and people arguing about "links golf."

Why? Because the historic Open Championship is coming up next week at Royal Birkdale, and the pros are already across the pond right now playing the Scottish Open to warm up.

As a certified golf noob, I did a deep dive into why this entire stretch of the summer feels completely different from American golf—and honestly, I’m kind of obsessed. If you're looking for a reason to get hyped for a fortnight of overseas golf, here are three things I discovered:

  • The 4:00 AM Coffee Club: Because of the time difference, these tournaments broadcast live before the sun even comes up here in Connecticut. It is the ultimate excuse to wake up ridiculously early, drink way too much coffee, and watch the best players in the world battle crazy coastal weather while you're still in your pajamas.

  • The "Links" Culture: Apparently, true Scottish-style golf isn't about perfectly manicured green grass and flying the ball directly to the pin. It's about hard, fast, fiery ground conditions where you literally bounce and roll the ball onto the green. If you think my scorecard is a disaster, just wait until you see a millionaire try to putt through a 30mph crosswind.

  • The Post-Round Scotch Tradition: You can't talk about Scottish golf without talking about a proper post-round wind-down. While they might be sipping a dram of single malt over there to warm up from the coastal chill, I’m advocating for a localized, sunny upgrade on our own patio.

What about you? Are you setting a 4:00 AM alarm to watch the drama unfold at Royal Birkdale, or are you strictly a "sleep in and watch the highlights at the lounge" kind of golfer? Let me know in the comments below! 👇
