A Plant Lover’s Guide to Perfect Fairways

If you’ve ever stepped foot into my apartment, you’d know two things immediately: 1) I consume an astronomical amount of cheese, and 2) my snake plants, Enzo and George, are the true rulers of the household. They don't say much—mostly because they’re plants—but they judge my reality TV commentary silently from the corner, and honestly, they’re excellent listeners.

As a self-proclaimed indoor plant parent and a certified "noob golfer" still trying to figure out which end of the club hits the ball, I’ve spent the last few weeks looking at Oxford Greens through a slightly different lens.

While I’m out here struggling to keep my ball from aggressively seeking out the nearest water hazard, I can't help but look at the fairways and think: How do they keep this giant outdoor living room so perfectly green?

The Ultimate Plant-Care Envy

Back home, keeping Enzo and George hydrated is a delicate delicate balance. A little too much water, and they throw a dramatic tantrum. A little too little, and they look at me like I've failed them.

So, you can imagine my absolute awe walking the grounds here. The turf maintenance team at Oxford Greens isn't just mowing lawns; they are operating a full-scale botanical masterclass. While I’m celebrate getting a single new leaf on a pothos, these absolute legends are managing acres of pristine bentgrass, keeping it perfectly manicured, resilient against New England's chaotic weather, and smooth enough to roll a putt on.

I actually tried to consult Enzo and George for some lawn care tips before my last round. I asked them how they felt about the driving range closing early on Mondays at 4:00 PM for its regular maintenance. George gave me a sharp look (classic George), which I interpreted as: "Professional turf requires boundary-setting, Samantha. Respect the grind." They aren't wrong. The dedication it takes to keep a championship course looking like a literal emerald carpet week after week is mind-boggling.

Enzo and George could never achieve this level of manicured perfection.

Finding the Magic in the Fairways

As I continue my journey from the sports media classrooms at Ithaca College to the actual, physical rough of Connecticut golf, I’m learning that golf is about appreciation. If I can't appreciate my scorecard just yet (we're working on it), I can at least appreciate the breathtaking views, the crisp morning air, and the sheer artistry of a perfectly maintained course.

Next time you’re out playing a round, take a second to look down at the grass beneath your spikes. It takes a village—and a lot of science—to keep it that pretty. And if you happen to see me out there whispering words of encouragement to a patch of clover after a terrible slice, just roll with it. I’m just trying to bring a little bit of that plant-parent energy to my short game.

What do you think? We hope you'll make sure to give a wave to our amazing maintenance crew. What’s your favorite hole or view at Oxford Greens where the fairway just looks too pretty to divot? Drop a comment and let me know!
